TX inspection rejection guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
In the Texas emissions-inspection counties, an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp is an automatic failure — the inspector doesn't even plug in if the light is on. Here is the part nobody explains: you cannot pass by clearing the code five minutes before the re-check. The car has to complete its readiness monitors (usually a few days of normal driving after a clear), and if the underlying fault is real, the light comes back. The honest path is: find the fault, fix what's actually broken, drive the cycle, re-inspect once.
The clock: A failed inspection gets a repair window before you owe a re-inspection — check the rejection slip for your exact date, and note your registration deadline can land regardless of where the repair stands. If the fix is one visit away, both deadlines fit in a week.
Clear the code for a $25 'no problem found,' send you to the inspection station, and collect your call next week when the light — or the readiness warning — puts you back in line. Clearing is not repairing.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $200–$2,500 in parts bought against a code's NAME instead of a test, plus a wasted re-inspection
All-module scan with freeze-frame data, live fuel trims and misfire counters, smoke test for the leak, pressure test for the converter — name the fault first, then quote the part. Flat rate, done at your driveway.
