Maintenance guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
Dusty Texas Hill Country roads and pollen season make filter replacement real maintenance, not a scam — a loaded filter genuinely costs you airflow. The problem is never the part; it is that a dirty filter becomes the free-inspection headline at every lube shop because it converts into the bundle that follows it.

Cost when it IS due
$20–$60 installed; the part alone is $12–$30 and this is the classic DIY
Most manuals say 30k, sometimes 15k under severe dust conditions — which for gravel-road or ranch driving is honestly you. Visual inspection at every oil change costs nothing and beats any sticker.
Pull it (usually two clips or four screws, sixty seconds) and do the light test: hold it up to a bright light or the sun. Uniform light through the media means it is fine; visible shadowing and dirt packed into the deep pleats means it is done. Shaking it out is not a filter service.
Two for one: being sold a filter change twice per interval (one shop, one warranty period, both claimed as due) and — the expensive version — a sealed-housing-means-you-need-ours premium filter story when a quality aftermarket element snaps in identical.
The light test is the whole test. If fuel economy really dropped enough to notice, a smoke test for vacuum leaks and a MAF live-data check find the actual cause most of the time — a clogged filter strong enough to hurt power also cannot hide from your eyes.

Is it due on YOUR car? Settle it with a measurement, not a sticker.
Intervals on this page are manufacturer schedules and honest street pricing for independent shops, published as a benchmark — not a quote for your car. The line item nobody else prices: whether YOUR car is actually due. A flat $150 diagnostic answers that with evidence instead of a calendar.
