Repair cost guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
One click, silence, dash lights blazing — the classic starter symptom. But a corroded battery cable, a dead cell collapsing under load, a neutral safety switch, or a ground strap bolted to a painted bracket produce identical symptoms, and each costs a fraction of a starter. Starters get replaced on vibes more than almost any other part.
Parts
$120–$350 (reman–new; OEM doubles it)
Labor
$150–$400
Book time

Typical quote, installed
$300–$700 installed
Tap-test says it’s the starter, swap it, charge $650 — the new starter sits on the old corroded cable, voltage collapses under crank anyway, and now you need a second diagnosis to undo the first.
Voltage-drop tests on BOTH battery cables and the ground strap during a crank attempt, a dedicated starter-draw/current test, and a control-circuit check at the solenoid. If voltage at the starter terminals collapses under crank, the starter may be fine and the cabling isn’t.

Ranges on this page are national street pricing for independent shops (parts + labor), published so you have a fair benchmark — not a quote for your car. The line item nobody else prices: whether the repair is actually needed. A flat $150 diagnostic answers that before parts get bought.
