Not an emergency — but a safety net may be switched off, or a fault is logged and growing. Book before it turns into a red light.

With the ABS lamp on, normal stopping works; a hard stop on wet leaves or gravel may lock a wheel and send you into a slide you cannot steer through. The light comes from the wheel-speed circuit, and on most cars a single dirty or dead sensor is the whole story — which is exactly why it gets upsold as a module.

What it usually proves to be (in order)

1A wheel-speed sensor or its tone ring (damaged, corroded, or coated in metallic brake dust)
2A cut sensor wire — curb damage is more common than module failure
3A blown fuse or corroded connector at the module
4Rarely: the ABS pump/module itself — and almost never the first thing a guessing shop should quote

What a parts-changer will tell you

See ABS light, quote a $1,200 ABS module off the code reader hint, skip the scope test on the sensor circuit. The sensor was $60.

The test that proves it

Pull the ABS-specific fault code (a generic reader often cannot see it), check live wheel-speed data on a slow drive, backprobe the sensor circuit with a scope. A dead sensor shows a flat line at speed — no guessing.
