Dashboard light guide · Glass Box Diagnostics
This lamp means continuing to drive can destroy the engine or cost you control of the car. Pull over as soon as it is safe and shut the engine off.
This is not a check-your-oil-level lamp on most cars — it is an oil PRESSURE warning, and an engine with no pressure can spin a bearing in under a minute at highway rpm. If it came on while driving: pull over, shut the engine off, and do not restart it to see-if-it-goes-away. Everything after that is a diagnostic sequence, and the first step is free: check the dipstick.
Hear oil-light, sell a sending unit or — worst — quote a used engine swap without ever hooking up a $25 mechanical gauge to see if pressure actually exists.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $80–$300 (sensor guess) up to catastrophic if a real pressure loss gets ignored — or a used-engine quote on an engine that is fine
A mechanical gauge at the sending-unit port tells you in 5 minutes whether you have a pressure problem or a sensor problem. Then level, condition, relief valve, bearing clearances — in that order. Never restart a dry engine to test.
