OBD-II code · Emissions / Engine
Not enough exhaust gas is recirculating. Usually carbon buildup plugging the EGR passage or valve — common on every direct-injection and diesel engine. The valve, the sensor, the solenoid and the passage can all fail into the same code.
New EGR valve ($400–$800 installed). On an engine whose real problem is a carbon-clogged passage behind the valve, the new valve gets clogged too — same code, same ticket.
Typical guess-and-swap cost: $400–$800 (new valve) when a $0 carbon cleaning fixes the flow
Command the EGR with a scan tool and watch manifold pressure or the RPM dip that proves flow. Pull and inspect the valve AND the passage. Plenty of stuck EGR codes are cleared by cleaning, not buying.
